Cadoc had never feared the swamps. He took comfort and drew strength from the sounds of the creatures slithering around him, the birds of prey eying him from above, the scrabbling of small creatures through the branches and underbrush in search of a meal. Each of the creatures a skilled hunter, as was he.

But Cadoc was not prey, and never would be—he preyed, and soon, once the dagger was his, he would prey upon all of Neos.

Starting with Vega himself.

And do so with the power of the dagger—the dagger he had heard of all his life, and had seen but once, twenty cycles ago in the Arena. Soon its power would belong to him.

Cadoc pressed the tips of his talons into his armored palms. Best not to get ahead of himself, an error he had seen far too many make. Only when he had the dagger for his own would he allow himself to think ahead. Only then would he contemplate the next step in his march to triumph.

For now, there was a smaller march to be made. A march through the swamps in company with a cadre of the Olokun who lived here, a march that would take him to the giant, and the knife that Cadoc intended to extract from the giant’s dead Numah body before that body was cold.

The party of Olokun accompanying Cadoc came to a halt, their leader holding a claw high as another Olokun approached from deeper in the swamplands. They conferred for a moment, and then the leader approached Cadoc.

“Our scouting party has continued to follow the creature and the female. They have climbed high upon the mountain a quarter day’s distance from here.”

“They understand that they are not to attack until I am present?”

“They do, of course.”

“Then let us make speed before the creature moves onward.”

“Of course,” the Olokun said again, his eyes bright with both obedience and anticipation. Much had been promised to these Olokun for their assistance in trapping the creature, and every one of those promises had been made by Cadoc.

As they set out at faster pace, Cadoc wondered if his father had any suspicion of just how loyal so many of the Olokun were to Vega’s smallest, fiercest, most dangerous son.

Cadoc allowed himself a grin. Whatever suspicions Vega did possess, the General soon would learn that he had not been half suspicious enough.
